Intimacy. It is a gift that I hope never to take for granted.
Intimacy within a marriage is a beautiful mystery- to be known so deeply, yet loved so lavishly. What is even more beautiful and the greatest mystery to which I cannot get my mind around, is why the living God in His perfect love and grace has given us access to know and be known by Him. Intimacy with the God of this universe.
I was reminded the other day of how approachable our God is…what a privilege and gift it is to have such access to the King of Kings. As I was briefly in the book of Joshua, I read: “But keep a distance of about a thousand yards between you and the ark; do not go near it” (3:4). God could have easily been satisfied with keeping His children at arms length, yet that was not close enough. For whatever reason but the unexplainable grace and unconditional love of our God, He decided ‘That’s not close enough…Closer still’. For all the sacrificing the priests and people could possibly make, there was not enough blood- not holy enough blood- to make access & intimacy with the Holy God possible. There would always be 1,000 yards necessary to separate…. and that distance was too much for a loving King.
The tiny babe born to simple young parents. An unassuming family becomes the headlines of the morning talkshow as God-made man was born to a young couple. He was a shock to all but One. The holy clock of God’s watch had been ticking away, as God so divinely orchestrated and wove every detail of history for this precise moment. THE holy blood- the One necessary to provide access to the King- had arrived to walk on earth as man, to dwell among us, so that 1,000 yards would no longer be necessary. Intimacy was now possible.
The sinless lamb would be led to the slaughter so that His very blood would become the final sacrifice…Access has been granted.
The curtain of the temple which once stood to clearly separate the holy ark of God’s presence from an unholy people would be torn in two… Access has been granted.
Christ would conquer sin upon the cross, thus making a sinful people clean & holy….Access has been granted.
The Holy Spirit would be poured out (Acts 2) to counsel and guide the people of God…. Oh praise you Jesus, Access has been granted.
No more 1,000 yards to separate us from our God. His presence now dwells among us. Even now as some girlfriends and I study the life of Esther in our Bible Study, we have been reminded that she, the very queen of Persia, did not have direct access to the king. She could not approach her own husband unless he first summoned her. Praise God that we can approach him any day, on any matter. And Hebrews even goes further to say we are to “approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (4:16…more awesome verses in 10:19-22)
Thank you Lord that you were not satisfied to keep us at arms length. Thank you that you have given us access to your throne, into your very presence. Thank you for intimacy….to know and be known by our great God. It means the world to me.
